The Kohlenbach is an approximately 16 km long left tributary of the Großache on the edge of the Kaiser Mountains in Tyrol .
course
The coal stream rises below the Granderalm northwest of Gasteig (municipality of Kirchdorf in Tirol ) at an altitude of 826 m above sea level. A. and flows first to the southeast and then turns to the north. It takes the Engetbach and the Kaisertalbach from the Kaiserbachtal near Griesenau and flows north through the Kohlental. At Schwendt , the otherwise almost flat valley has a clear, presumably glacial threshold that is broken through by the Kohlenbach in a cut up to 30 m deep. Shortly before Kössen it takes the Weißenbach with the tributary from the Walchsee from the left and shortly afterwards flows in Kössen into the Großache, which is also called Kössener Ache here.
Catchment area and water supply
The catchment area of the Kohlenbach is 109.8 km². The highest point in the catchment area is the Ackerlspitze in the Wilder Kaiser at 2329 m above sea level. A.
The mean discharge at the Schwendt-Unterbichl gauge, 7.05 km above the mouth, is 2.65 m³ / s, which corresponds to a relatively high discharge rate of 55.3 l / s · km². The Kohlenbach has a level flow regime with a low amplitude, which is characterized by the snowmelt in the higher areas of the catchment area. The mean runoff in the month of April with the most water (3.53 m³ / s) is around twice as high as in the month of February with the least water (1.74 m³ / s).
ecology
The coal stream is classified as natural or near-natural in the upper reaches, above Schwendt it is built or remote. Below it is natural again, except for the local area of Kössen. It has water quality classes I-II throughout (as of 2005).
