The baroque , formerly Gothic church of Sankt Kolomann is located in a meadow valley between the Lower Bavarian towns of Neukirchen vorm Wald and Tittling . The sponsor is the Filialkirchenstiftung St. Kolomann. This church served as a pilgrimage church for a long time . With the decline of the pilgrimage tradition, it was forgotten. Since 2012, however, the number of visitors to this artistically valuable church has been increasing steadily, which can be seen from the large number of events. In addition to trade fairs, baptisms and weddings take place here, as well as concerts, cultural-religious events and poetry readings.

St. Kolomann has a baroque peculiarity: the central, man-sized altar figure of St. Kolomann is movable. If the priest climbs a few steps from behind and turns the saint to one side, he can use this place as a pulpit. Since 2012 St. Kolomann has been part of the route of the international pilgrimage route Via Nova .

history

Church bill from 1602

Nothing is known about the time this church was built. A legend tells of a wooden church that is said to have stood here in the past. The age of the "new" church built from bricks and rubble is not known. The first written testimony comes from a visitation report from the year 1558. Existing church accounts from around 1620 show that the church belonged to the noble families in Englburg . The Schwarzensteiners (1426–1576) could have been the founders of the church in Gothic times. During the renovation at the end of the last century, bricked-up Gothic window niches were visible in the presbytery . During the foundation work, some fragments of Gothic cross ribs came to light. It is not known when the church was finally redesigned in baroque style.

It is proven that three masses were read every year, namely on the Thursday after St. Laurentius, St. Barbara and St. Kolomann. Orally it is said that the church and the spring were the destination of pilgrimages for a long time . As with many " Bruendl chapels the source water flowing not to the church to the nearby stream was" regarded as beneficial and healthy making. It was also valued as digestible drinking water. That is why it was still being scooped in bottles in the 20th century and carried home.

Since the fundamental renovation between 1985 and 2012, the church has been opened for services and prayer, as well as for artistic, musical and literary events. In 2017, around 50 church and music events took place. The church is located on the “ Via Nova ” long-distance hiking trail , which has a branch from Vilshofen to Příbram in the Czech Republic.

Description of the church

inner space

The interior is designed in the Baroque style with harmonious curves, concave and convex shapes; For example the semi-dome of the chancel, the symmetrically winding shape of the gallery or the oval windows with the colored stucco framing of the window reveal .

As part of the renovation work in 1987, the glass panes were designed by students and teachers from the Vilshofen Technical School. They include "beginning and end", "faith", "hope" and "love".

The late Gothic, mobile altar saint Kolomann can be turned to the side by the priest to create an optimal place for himself as a preacher.

Like St. Kolomann himself, the accompanying sculptures John and Paul are depicted in the form of pilgrims from Roman times.

The simply framed, unrestored panel in the sanctuary of St. Kolomann is likely to date from the late 16th or early 17th century. The painter is unknown. It has probably been in the church since it was first built.

The way of the cross hanging in the parish church of Neukirchen vorm Wald originally comes from St. Kolomann. Because it was supposed to stay in the parish church, the artist Helga Mader made a copy based on the old model in 2013.

The source that never freezes over and flows into the Wiesenbach was previously thought to have healing powers. It was probably the reason that a church was built at this point. Until well into the 20th century, jugs and bottles were filled with water to take home.

In 2012 the source was revised. The well built next to the church is fed with water via a " ram ", an automatic lifting mechanism that only works with water pressure. The fountain column is crowned with a representation of St. Kolomann by the hand of the sculptor Bertram Würfl.
