Bilingual subject teaching

Interested and suitable students receive additional English lessons in the second semester of class 5 (two hours per week) and in class 6 (1 hour per week). Successful participation in the bilingual preparatory course enables a bilingual class 7 to be attended. In grades 7 to 10 there is a subject lesson in English. The subject taught in English varies in the grades. In the upper level of the Gymnasium, the students can choose either a major subject and a basic subject "Community Studies bilingual" or two basic subjects, one of which is "Community Studies bilingual". Participation in bilingual classes is also intended to facilitate studies or vocational training abroad and increase professional opportunities in professions with international connections. In addition, bilingual teaching deepens cultural knowledge of the English-speaking world and promotes understanding of different perspectives when assessing historical or social contexts.

Student exchange

The student exchange with the partner schools in Burgundy (France) and Krakow (Poland), the trip to the partner schools in the USA and the Hastings trip (England) have been taking place for many years.

Economic education

In line with the concept of economic education as part of general education, economic content is integrated into the teaching of the various subjects at all school levels. The planned preparation of one's own study and career choice is of central importance in view of the expected increase in discontinuous career biographies in the future in terms of the goal of self-determination and self-development of the students as well as the willingness to take on responsibility in a social context. The focus here is on the ability to take initiative and take responsibility in order to recognize and seize existing opportunities. In grade nine, all students take part in a 1-2-week internship. Application training is carried out with networked partners from the region. Grades 10 to 13 take part in a career and study information day. In the upper level of the gymnasium there is advice from the Employment Agency, assessment center training, career choice lessons from the Employment Agency, a visit to the University of Mainz (open day, BISS offers) and events for career and study orientation with representatives from universities, technical colleges, companies, students, alumni and parents as experts.

The music lessons at Konrad-Adenauer-Gymnasium Westerburg teach students the variety of musical forms of expression through the combination of theory and practice - from dealing with old works to the differentiated consideration of modern styles. That is why the Music Student Council claims to reach all the senses through the most complex teaching possible and to raise awareness and develop them further by making music, singing, listening to works and dancing together. Music should be made tangible and tangible at the Koanrad-Adenauer-Gymnasium beyond the regular lessons. STEM-friendly school

"ESD school"

Since 2001 the Konrad-Adenauer-Gymnasium has been part of the network of “ecological schools” in Rhineland-Palatinate. Today these schools bear the title “ESD School”, as the projects no longer aim only at traditional environmental protection, but instead focus on the aspect of sustainability. The school attaches particular importance to the protection of the environment and species and has therefore had the title "Ecological School" since 2001. The school's internal environmental and wild bee working group won a special prize at the 2009 federal environmental competition in Kiel for its commitment to environmental protection. Diverse information events on the topics of water, climate, recycling and energy motivate people to use resources responsibly in everyday school life as well as at home. Accordingly, a photovoltaic system is sensibly integrated into the lesson and collection containers for corks, printer cartridges, CDs and old batteries are available. The environmental project days and educational trips that take place on a regular basis enable the pupils to deal intensively with environmental and ESD topics, which often leads to specialist work and public relations work. The pupils are given a wide range of options by participating in the environmental and wild bee working group and by designing and maintaining the school biotope. The annual apple harvest on our orchard and the subsequent juice production are the responsibility of the AG students. In the beekeeping group, pupils look after the school's own bee colonies responsibly and produce our school honey. The pupils in grade five experience biodiversity through direct contact with animals and plants with the intention of developing a stronger bond with nature. In addition, they visit the bird park in Uckersdorf, the extracurricular learning location “Zoo”. In the natural sciences elective from grade 9 onwards, ecology is a focus and allows students to do a variety of outdoor work in our school biotope. In addition to the class speaker, each class also elects an environmental speaker. These then elect the school environment spokesperson .

Scientific focus

The scientific focus at the Konrad-Adenauer-Gymnasium Westerburg is determined by the topic- and lesson-related seminar days in grade 10, a continuous range of advanced courses for all three scientific subjects in the upper level, a two-day experimental internship in grade 12 at the University of Göttingen, additional offers for Interested and capable students in the AG area as well as the natural sciences elective in grades 9 and 10. This elective is on an equal footing with the third foreign languages French, Latin and Spanish in the sense of the school regulations. The Konrad-Adenauer-Gymnasium enables particularly talented and motivated students to take part in both the natural sciences elective and a third foreign language. The official inauguration of the redesigned and redesigned school building on March 2, 2012 led to an additional improvement in the natural science teaching options. Another special feature is the annual "RoboCup" competition, in which teams of schoolchildren take part with autonomously controlled robot cars.

Media literacy area

The KAG is a media competence school . Media competence in the orientation level is primarily promoted by the subject CT ("Computer Technologies") in the areas of operating system, word processing, presentation and the Internet. In the 6th to 8th grades, short projects on the topic of "competent and safe Internet use" follow in the context of youth media protection. In the intermediate level, the skills and abilities in the use of new media are deepened, so that in the upper level the computer science subject specifically develops the media competence of the learners. 7th grade students also have the opportunity to take part in courses to obtain the ECDL-Start ( European Computer Driving License ).

Democracy Learning and Participation

Network “Strong Students” for prevention and intervention

The fields of activity for prevention and intervention include dispute resolution, cyberbullying, addiction prevention, experiential education, no blame approach (bullying intervention), conflict resolution in large groups, learning about democracy, active breaks, grief counseling, social security work (liaison teacher and student representative), classroom management, youth media protection and collegial case advice Supervision. This area is supported by school social work and school pastoral care.

integration

Experience pedagogy already supports the formation of the class community in grade 5. The "class council" carried out in grades 5 and 6 also supports the class community and deliberately introduces democratic elements into school life. In grades 7 and 8, the class community is further developed in the classroom and the individual is encouraged to develop. The prevention concept includes the externally supported organization of a day on the subject of addiction and the implementation of the social day. The planning and implementation of the joint class trip also means strengthening social and planning skills; Shared experiences outside of school require tolerance, patience and responsible behavior. The two-day event of the integration and method days of year 11 serves to get to know classmates and the regular course leaders better by working together with the focus on communication.

Democracy Learning and Participation

Since 2003 the Konrad-Adenauer-Gymnasium has participated in the pilot project "Development and testing of opportunities for students to participate in and outside of schools" as part of the "Learning & Living Democracy" project run by the Federal and State Commission. Since 2011 the school has been a member of Netzwerk Nord as a model school for participation and democracy. A wide range of class offices, the introduction of the "class council" in the orientation stage and the implementation of the pupil parliament ensure a high level of participation by the learners in shaping school life. In addition to the acquisition of social and personal skills, this deepens the area of democracy learning.

Catchment area

At the school, pupils from all over the middle (for example: Verbandsgemeinde Selters , Verbandsgemeinde Westerburg , Verbandsgemeinde Hachenburg ) and the eastern Westerwaldkreis ( Verbandsgemeinde Rennerod , Verbandsgemeinde Bad Marienberg , Verbandsgemeinde Wallmerod ) are taught up to Hesse (for example: Dornburg ) and the Altenkirchen district (for example: Nisterberg ).

history

Until the end of the 1950s, there was no grammar school in what was then the Oberwesterwaldkreis . There were three secondary schools in the district. Pupils who were aiming for the Abitur had to attend schools in Montabaur, Hadamar, Limburg, Altenkirchen, Wissen, Betzdorf or Herborn. After the state government had given its approval for the establishment of a grammar school, there was a vote in the district council on October 27, 1958 for the location of the school. In the fourth ballot, Westerburg prevailed against Hachenburg and Bad Marienberg.

On April 1, 1960, the new school started teaching. It was initially called "State Mathematical and Natural Science Progymnasium - under construction - Westerburg". Initially, the only urban school building that housed the elementary and secondary schools served as the school building. After five years, the two starting classes with 84 first-year students have turned into 12 classes with 440 students. The accommodation was now also in pavilions. In the school year 1965/66 the new school building was ready to move into. It was built according to the plans of Edmund Zens and comprised 140 rooms. From April 1, 1966, the name of the school was "Staatliches Neusprachliches und Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliches Gymnasium - under construction Westerburg / Westerwald". In 1967 all grades up to 13th grade were set up and the "under construction" in the school name could disappear. In 1972, an extension had to be moved into: in the mid-1970s the school had almost 1200 students. In 1976 the school was named after the first Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany . A chronicle was published on the 50th anniversary of the school's founding.

For several years now, the number of students has been at a consistently high level.
