Konrad Kümmel (born April 22, 1848 in Rechberg , today part of Schwäbisch Gmünd ; † June 20, 1936 in Stuttgart ) was a Catholic priest , papal house prelate, German writer , well-known author of popular stories and newspaper editor.

Life

Konrad Kümmel was born in Rechberg in Swabia, now a district of Schwäbisch Gmünd. He studied philosophy, Catholic theology, art history and archeology in Tübingen and was a member of the Guelfia theological society . He was then ordained a priest and from 1873 served as a pastor in Weingarten (Württemberg) . From 1877 to 1895 the clergyman worked in Stuttgart as editor of the “Deutsches Volksblatt” , between 1877 and 1927 also for the “Katholisches Sonntagsblatt” . He placed both newspapers in the service of the Württemberg Center Party . From 1879 to 1928 he also issued the "Catholic People's and House Calendar" . All three publications were initially published by the publisher “Volksblatt AG”, and from 1923 by the Catholic “Schwabenverlag”. Konrad Kümmel held a leading position in these publishing houses.

Konrad Kümmel achieved national fame in the entire German-speaking area as the author of folk tales, mostly religious, historical or church-historical. They appeared in various anthologies and were part of the standard repertoire of Catholic public and parish libraries in the first half of the 20th century, but also of non-denominational libraries. Kümmel was awarded the honorary title of Papal House Prelate and Pope Leo XIII. awarded him the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice badge of honor in 1889 . He was also awarded the "War Memorial Coin 1870/71" and the "Kaiser Wilhelm Medal".

The priest-writer died in Stuttgart in 1936. An obituary in the “Pilger” , the church newspaper of the Speyer diocese (No. 26, from June 28, 1936) describes him as the “old master of the Catholic folk art of storytelling” . Monsignor Kümmel said of himself:

“My pen is to me - next to God of course - my everything; no repugnance, no bitter disappointment has robbed me of my love for the people and the love of writing for the people. Writing is easy for me because I enjoy it. ... No musician can love his instrument as I love my pen. "

Konrad Kümmel also acted as chaplain to Prince Wilhelm Karl von Urach , head of a branch line of the Württemberg royal family, who was elected King of Lithuania as "Mindaugas II" by the Lithuanian regional council in June 1918 , but the office was no longer due to political developments started. He was the son-in-law of King Ludwig III. of Bavaria . In the holdings GU 117 no. 986 of the main state archive in Stuttgart, a “Address at the First Holy Communion of the princesses Maria Gabriele and Elisabeth von Urach by Prelate Konrad Kümmel” is archived from this pastoral activity.

Until his death, Kümmel worked as a pastor in Böblingen and as the chaplain of the ducal family. According to his wishes, his body was buried on the Hohenrechberg .

In Kümmel's birthplace Schwäbisch Gmünd, district Rechberg, the "Konrad-Kümmel-Straße" is named after the writer; also in Friedrichshafen the "Konrad-Kümmel-Weg".
