Konstantin Fürst Czartoryski (born October 28, 1773 in Puławy , † April 23, 1860 in Vienna ) was a Polish officer and art collector.

Life

Czartoryski was the son of Adam Kasimir Czartoryski . He was born in Saint Petersburg Russian guards officer and adjutant of the Grand Duke Constantine . At the time of the Duchy of Warsaw in 1809, he joined the Polish army and established a regiment at his own expense . Then he took part in Napoleon's campaign against Russia and distinguished himself in the Battle of Moscow .

In 1816 Czartoryski rejoined the Russian army for a short time in Saint Petersburg and became Imperial Adjutant General. But soon he withdrew completely from public life.

He settled in Vienna in 1828 . Here he set up a valuable collection of paintings and in 1832/1834 bought the palace, soon to be called the Czartoryski-Schlössel , in the then suburb of Weinhaus , since 1892 in the 18th district of Vienna , Währing . There he made his art collection accessible to the public.

Konstantin Fürst Czartoryski died on April 23, 1860 in Vienna. The palace was inherited by his son Georg Konstantin Czartoryski , after whose death in 1912 the City of Vienna bought it. The palace was demolished in 1957.

In Vienna in 1894 an alley not far from the Czartoryski Castle, on the Schafberg, was named after the prince (17th and 18th district, Czartoryskigasse ).

Constantine's brother Adam Georg Czartoryski was also a Polish officer.
