history

Two Ashoka edicts from the 3rd century BC were placed on the fortress mountain . Found. Later the place was in the hands of the Shatavahanas , then the Chalukya and Hoysala dynasties and the Vijayanagar empires. When the fortress was originally built is unknown, but in 1786 it fell to Tipu Sultan of Mysore , who had it expanded with the help of French engineers. In the Third Mysore War , Fort Koppal was conquered in 1790 after a six-month siege by the troops of the British and Nizam of Hyderabad, who was allied with the British . As a result of the war, Koppal came to Hyderabad, which was a nominally independent princely state under British rule during the British colonial era . One year after Indian independence, Hyderabad was annexed by India in 1948. Through the States Reorganization Act in 1956 Koppal came to the state of Mysore created after the language borders of the Kannada (renamed Karnataka in 1973 ). Koppal has been the district capital since 1998.
