history

Provisional government in Shanghai in 1919

As a result of the movement of March 1 , 1919, two other governments in exile were founded in addition to the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea founded in Shanghai: one on March 21 in Vladivostok and one on April 21 in Keijō . Under Ahn Chang-ho as mediator, these others merged with the Shanghai one in August. Rhee Syng-man was elected the first president of the government in exile . Kim Gu was also twice president and Kim Kyu-sik was vice president. The Provisional Government had to flee from Shanghai to Hangzhou in 1932 and, after moving several times, finally reached Chongqing in 1940 . This is where the government of the Republic of China around Chiang Kai-shek withdrew in 1938, as a result of the Chinese Civil War and the Second Sino-Japanese War .

After independence from Japan in 1945, the Provisional Government withdrew from exile to the Korean Peninsula in the southern part of the country occupied by the US military . Rhee Syng-man was the last president of the government in exile and the first president of the Republic of Korea , founded in 1948 , whose government replaced the Provisional Government.

Korean Liberation Army

The armed arm of the Provisional Government was the Korean Liberation Army ( 한국 광복군 , 韓國 光復 軍 , Hanguk Gwangbokgun), which was founded on September 17, 1940 after moving to Chongqing. On December 9, 1941, war was declared against the Japanese Empire. In 1942, a military agreement was signed with Chinese armed forces with whom joint operations were conducted, followed by an agreement in 1943 with the British armed forces. Among other things, she took part in the fight against the Japanese armed forces on the side of the British troops in Myanmar and India . Leading members of the Liberation Army were Ji Cheong-cheon and Lee Beom-seok , who became its first prime minister after the Republic of Korea was founded.
