The Euonymus alatus ( Euonymus alatus ), also winged spindle tree , Korkspindel or Korkflügelstrauch called, is a plant from the family of celastraceae (Celastraceae). He is originally from Japan and central China .

description

The winged spindle bush grows as a deciduous shrub , reaches heights of 2 to 3 meters and grows slowly. In winter, edged, with kick corky wings occupied sectors particularly to the fore by the lack of foliage. The bark is gray to greenish. The plant is poisonous. Its opposite, short-stalked leaves are simply elongated ovate and about 3 to 6 cm long with a serrated leaf margin. In summer, the shrub with its green leaves is hardly noticeable, it is rather inconspicuous. But that changes in autumn when it gets bright red leaves. Because of this spectacular carmine red autumn color , this plant species is also called "Burning Bush" in America.

The flowering period extends from May to June. Then it has green-yellow, very rich, but inconspicuous, four-fold flowers . Attractive purple-colored, quadruple capsule fruits with seeds covered by an orange-colored aril can be admired from September to October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = about 40.

use

The cork wing shrub has found its way into many gardens as an ornamental shrub . It tolerates shade, is easy to prune and is hardy . It grows on all well drained, not too dry garden soils , where it prefers a sunny to partially shaded location.
