Kostelní Bříza (German Kirchenbirk ) is a district of the city of Březová in the Czech Republic . It is located eight kilometers south of Sokolov and belongs to the Okres Sokolov .

Geographical location

Kostelní Bříza is located on a knoll, on the right side above the valley of the Velká Libava ( Großer Liebaubach ), in the Kaiserwald .

Local division

The district Kostelní Bříza is divided into the basic settlement units Bystřina ( Reichenbach ), Kostelní Bříza, Krásná Lípa ( Schönlind ), Ostrov ( Wöhr ), Smrkovec ( Schönficht ) and Žitná ( Rockendorf ), which also form cadastral districts. In the field of Kostelní Bříza also contains the abandoned settlements Horni Žitná ( upper Rockendorf ) and Týmov ( Deep Green ).

Neighboring towns are Rudolec in the north, Kamenice in the northeast, Rovná and Prameny in the southeast, Lazy in the south, Studánka and Dvorečky in the southwest, Arnoltov in the west and Silnice and Šabina in the northwest.

history

Kostelní Bříza was probably founded in the 12th or 13th century during the colonization of the Leuchtenberg feud by the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg . The village was first mentioned in documents in 1370.

The population fell from 342 in 1869 to 50 in 1991. At the beginning of the 20th century, the innkeeper Zartner was a well-known folk musician.

After the Munich Agreement , the place was added to the German Reich and until 1945 belonged to the district of Falkenau an der Eger .

After the Germans were expelled from Czechoslovakia , Kostelní Bříza became part of the new Prameny military training area in 1946 ; between 1947 and 1953 the houses in the village were used as soldiers' quarters. During the military use of the area until 1954, 560 of the 613 houses in Kostelní Bříza and the surrounding areas were demolished. Then Kostelní Bříza formed with the districts Bystřina, Krásná Lípa, Ostrov, Rudolec and Studánka again a community in Okres Sokolov. 1976 Kostelní Bříza was incorporated into Březová.

Culture and sights

  • Former mansion, the half-timbered building with a mansard roof, formerly Gasthaus Zartner, has been used as the U bílého koníka restaurant since 2011 .
  • Church of St. Peter and Paul, the renaissance building erected in the 16th century received its current baroque appearance during renovations from 1802 to 1805.
  • Baroque rectory, today it serves as a forestry office.
  • Wayside shrine from 1895 on the village square.
  • Castle park with ruins of the baroque castle built in 1679, the park was revitalized in 2010.
