Smrkovec (German: Schönficht ) is a basic settlement unit of the city of Březová (Brösau) in the Czech Republic . The place, which is often counted among the mining towns , was demolished until 1950 and is now a desert .
geography
The place is located in the Kaiserwald (Czech: Slavkovský les) about 9 km southwest of Březová in the former military training area Prameny . Smrkovec is a settlement unit and cadastral district .
history
The settlement was first mentioned in a document in 1355. In the middle of the 14th century it had 16 farms, a mill and a rest house. In the 16th century the settlement, which had grown to 65 houses, experienced a further boom due to silver mining. In 1550 it received mining privileges from King Ferdinand I and was named a town. Further privileges were promised. But the great expectations were never met. Schönficht was the parish for several parishes in the area: Miltigau ( Milíkov , until 1787), Perlsberg (Lazy, zu Königswart ), Wöhr (Verda, now Ostrov), Schönbrunn (Studánka) and Rockendorf (Žitná).
After the Munich Agreement , the place was added to the German Empire and belonged to the Marienbad district until 1945 .
After the Second World War, the almost exclusively German-speaking population was expelled and the houses demolished. The area of Schönficht, which has been called Smrkovec since 1947, was incorporated into the Prameny military training area. Even if the structures of the village are still clearly visible, especially in the aerial photo, only a few remains of the wall can be found today. The Church of St. Wenceslas was also demolished. The area was abandoned by the army in 1989. Today Smrkovec belongs as a basic settlement unit to the district Kostelní Bříza of the town of Březová.

The place is named for the bismuth mineral Smrkovecit , which was first found on old mining heaps in the area.
