The Kotelnica is a mountain ridge on the Polish-Slovak border in the High Tatras with 1987 m in its highest elevation, the Wielka Kotelnica , in the massif of the Liptowskie Mury .

Location and surroundings

The state border runs over the main ridge of the Tatra Mountains , on which the Kotelnica is located. Below the ridge are two valleys, the Dolina Pięciu Stawów Polskich in the north and the Dolina Ciemnosmreczyńska in the south.

The Kotelnica is separated from the peak of the Niżni Kostur in the west by the Czarna Ławka mountain pass , and from the Gładki Wierch peak to the west by the Gładka Ławka mountain pass .

The course of the summit looks like this from east to west:

etymology

The Polish name Kotelnica can be translated as "Kesselberg". The name comes from the basin of the mountain lake Czarny Staw Polski , the south face of which is the Kotelnica.

Flora and fauna

Despite its height, the Kotelnica has a colorful flora and fauna. Numerous plant species occur, especially high alpine flowers and grasses. In addition to insects and mollusks and birds of prey, marmots and chamois also visit the summit.

tourism

There are currently no marked hiking trails on the Kotelnica. The planned ridge path was never completed. However, a yellow-marked hiking trail leads north below the summit from the Szpiglasowa Przełęcz mountain pass into the Dolina Pięciu Stawów Polskich valley . The mountain huts Schronisko PTTK nad Morskim Okiem and Schronisko PTTK w Dolinie Pięciu Stawów Polskich are suitable as a starting point for this . On the adjacent Gładka Przełęcz mountain pass, an unmarked hiking trail leads from the Polish side and a marked hiking trail from the Slovak side.
