The Guacolda power plant ( Spanish Central termoeléctrica Guacolda ) is a coal-fired power plant in Chile , which is located on a headland near the city of Huasco , Region III . The power plant is owned by Empresa Eléctrica Guacolda SA (EEG) and is also operated by EEG.
Guacolda plays an essential role in the northern part of the Chilean interconnection network Sistema Interconectado Central (SIC), as most of the other power plants and especially the hydropower plants are located in the southern part of the SIC.
Data
With an installed capacity of currently 608 MW (planned 760 MW), it is the second most powerful coal-fired power plant in Chile. The annual production in 2001 was 2.076 billion kWh and in 2009 it was 3.207 billion kWh. In 2011, 4.695 billion kWh were generated, corresponding to 10.2% of the electricity generated in the SIC.
Power plant units
The power plant currently consists of four blocks. Another block is currently being built and is scheduled to go into operation in September 2015. The following table gives an overview:
block | Max. Power (MW) | Start of operation | turbine | generator | Steam boiler |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 152 or 150 | 11/01/1995 | MHI | MEC | MHI |
2 | 152 or 150 | 08/22/1996 | MHI | MEC | MHI |
3 | 152 | 07/30/2009 | MHI | MEC | MHI |
4th | 152 | 10/06/2010 | MHI | MEC | MHI |
5 | 152 or 154 | under construction | MHI | MEC | MHI |
The costs were for Unit 3 at 250, for Unit 4 at 320 and for Unit 5 at 235 million USD.
fuel
In addition to coal, EEG also uses petroleum coke , which is supplied by refineries in Texas , as fuel . EEG sources the coal from suppliers in Chile, Colombia and the USA. The coal is delivered to the port located directly next to the power plant.
owner
The operator of the power plant, Empresa Eléctrica Guacolda SA (EEG) is 50% owned by AES Gener SA ( AES ), 25% each belonged to Empresas Copec SA and Inversiones Ultraterra Ltda . In March 2014, AES acquired the remaining shares for $ 728 million , but passed the 50% minus one share on to Global Infrastructure Partners .
Others
The turnover of the EEG increased from 2009 to 2011 from 352.61 to 537.38 million USD, the profit rose in the same period from 56 to 62 million USD.
The Andritz AG provides flue gas treatment plants, desalination plants and a denitrification plant worth 150 million €. The plants are scheduled to go into operation by the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016.
A 34 km long 220 kV line leads from the power station to the substation in Maintencillo, which is the connection to the SIC network.
