The Römerbrücke power plant is a gas and steam turbine power plant operated by Energie SaarLorLux AG in the Ostspange industrial park in Saarbrücken . It is used to generate district heating and electrical energy . The electrical capacity is 132  MW (gas turbine 42 MW, steam turbine 90 MW), the thermal 230 MW. A 177 meter high chimney helps to lower the immission in the immediate vicinity.

History and technology

The power plant was built in 1964 by Saarbrücken Stadtwerke as a heating power plant to supply the nearby residential area of Eschberg and an industrial area with district heating . In 1967 a turbine for power generation in combined heat and power was retrofitted for peak load operation. In 1974/1975 there was an expansion in combined cycle technology with an electrical capacity of 43 MW and a thermal capacity of 53 MW. In 1989 a circulating fluidized bed furnace was installed. The energy source was local hard coal, the output rose, also due to the increasing number of district heating customers, to 56 MW electrical and 85 MW thermal.

In 2001 the plant was taken over by GDF SUEZ Energie Deutschland AG (from 2015 Engie Deutschland AG ) in Berlin. Stadtwerke Saarbrücken AG took over operational management until April 2005 . GDF Suez Saarland GmbH (a subsidiary of GDF SUEZ Energie Deutschland AG and Stadtwerke Saarbrücken AG ) has been running the company since May 2005 .

Since September 2005, the combined cycle plant, which has been modernized for 40 million euros by replacing the gas turbine , a downstream waste heat steam generator and additional firing, has been able to produce energy. Energy sources are optionally coal, oil and preferably natural gas . The electrical efficiency is up to 42%, taking into account the thermal energy share up to 90%. Direct CO 2 - emissions decreased compared to 2002 5% dust by 44%, nitrogen oxide by 37% and sulfur dioxide by 50% while increasing performance.

The power plant is connected to the 110 kV maximum voltage level in the power grid of Stadtwerke Saarbrücken as the distribution network operator.

At the end of 2010, the municipal utility and transport company Saarbrücken expanded its cooperation with GDF Suez Energie Deutschland AG . Part of this was the transition from the Römerbrücke power plant to the joint subsidiary Energie SaarLorLux AG (ESLL) . On July 1, 2011, the Römerbrücke cogeneration plant officially became the property of ESLL.

Chimney of the thermal power station illuminated at night

Various artists have been able to lift the power plant out of industrial construction with their sculptures .

Since October 30, 2014, the 177 m high chimney of the thermal power station has been illuminated by colored LED spotlights in the evening hours .
