The Sondu-Miriu power station ( English Sondu Miriu Hydroelectric Power Station ) is a run-of-river power station in Kisumu County , Kenya . It is located on the Sondu River , about 15 km from its confluence with the Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria . The city of Kisumu is located approx. 40 km northwest of the power plant.
Construction of the power plant began in March 1999. The first machine in the power plant went into operation in December 2007. The official inauguration by the President of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki , took place on July 24, 2009. The power plant is owned by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) and is also operated by KenGen.
Barrier structure
The barrier structure consists of a weir with a length of 70 m and a height of 18 m. A tunnel (length 6.2 km, diameter 4.2 m) leads from the dam wall in a north-westerly direction. Then an above-ground pressure pipe (length approx. 1 km, diameter 3 m) guides the water to the power plant.
Reservoir
The weir dammed the Sondu into a small reservoir. The normal target is 1,402 m above sea level .
power plant
The Sondu-Miriu power plant has an installed capacity of 60 MW . The average annual production is 330 million kWh . The maximum height of fall is approx. 200 m. The flow rate is 41 m³ / s.
The two Francis turbines each have a maximum output of 31.2 MW and the associated generators 33.7 MVA . The first machine went online in December 2007 and the second in March 2008. In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased from 11 kV to 132 kV using machine transformers. A 49 km long single line leads from the switchgear to the substation in Kisumu .
After the water has passed the power plant, it is led to the Sang'oro power plant via a channel (length 4.7 km, width 2.6 m) .
Others
The total cost of the power plant project is given as KES 19 billion or USD 260 million . The Japan Bank for International Cooperation granted a loan of US $ 99.5 million for the project.
