The Pfreimd power plant group (also called Jansen power plant group after its initiator ) is a system of reservoirs and hydropower plants in the Pfreimd , a tributary of the Naab , in the Upper Palatinate Forest in eastern Bavaria .

Dams

The system is primarily used to store and use the river's hydropower to generate electricity; Only as a side effect can the dams be used to regulate floods if required . The group consists of two dams that dam the Pfreimd ( Kainzmühlsperre and Trausnitztalsperre ), an elevated storage basin ( Rabenleite high storage reservoir ) and three power plants with a total electrical output of around 140 megawatts ( combined pumped storage and run-of-river power plant Tanzmühle , Reisach pumped storage plant and Trausnitz run-of-river power plant ). Storage facilities and power plants are connected by three pressure tunnels . The group is electrically connected to the substation in Weiden ( 49 ° 38 ′ 49.4 ″  N , 12 ° 10 ′ 2.5 ″  E ) via a 110 kV line .

The systems were built in the 1950s by OBAG ( Energieversorgung Ostbayern AG , formerly Oberpfalzwerke ) and are now operated by Engie Deutschland GmbH .

history

The construction of the system was initiated by the long-standing CEO of OBAG, Bernhard Jansen , to whom the group was later named in honor.

The group's plants were built and commissioned in three construction phases between 1951 and 1961:

In the first construction phase (1951-55), the Trausnitz dam with the local power plant was built (commissioning 1952). At the same time, the Reisach power plant was built (although initially with only two machine sets) and the Reisach tunnel , which connects the Reisach plant with the elevated storage facility over a distance of more than 1.3 km, was driven from two sides .

During the construction work, the decision was made to increase the performance of the system: For this purpose, the installation of a third machine set was prepared in the Reisach plant, the storage flaps at the Trausnitz storage facility were increased by 1 m and the surrounding dam was increased to accommodate the usable storage volume of the two To increase storage facilities to 1.5 million m³ each.

From 1954 the dam of the Kainzmühltalsperre was also increased, the Tanzmühle plant was built and the connecting owl tunnel was advanced. In the summer of 1955, the running turbine in the Tanzmühle plant and the first two pumped storage units in the Reisach plant went into operation.

In the second section (1958/59), the pumped storage machine set was installed in the Tanzmühle plant and connected to the Reisach tunnel via the vineyard tunnel , so that the connection to the elevated storage facility was established. In the third section (1960/61), the increase in output prepared during the first section was finally completed with the installation of the third machine set in the Reisach plant.

In 2001 OBAG merged into E.ON Bayern AG and the power plant was operated by the subsidiary E.ON Wasserkraft GmbH . In 2009 E.ON exchanged several power plants with GDF Suez for antitrust reasons , including that of the Pfreimd power plant group. Since then, GDF Suez (now renamed Engie) has been running the business.

In 2018, a battery storage power plant with an output of 12.5 MW was also put into operation.

Power plants and storage facilities are connected via three pressure tunnels :

  • Reisach tunnel , 1315 meters long, connects the Reisach pumped storage plant and the Rabenleite high storage facility
  • Eulengrundstollen connects the Tanzmühle plant and the Kainzmühlspeicher
  • Weinbergstollen , connects the Tanzmühle plant and the Reisachstollen
