The Kainzmühlsperre (Kainzmühlstausee, Kainzmühlspeicher) is a dam on the Pfreimd in the Naab Mountains , Upper Palatinate Forest , in Bavaria . The Kainzmühlstausee is located in the municipality of Tännesberg near Leuchtenberg in the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district .
As part of the Jansen power plant group (135 MW), the Kainzmühlspeicher is the lower basin of the Reisach-Rabenleite pumped storage plant (98 MW) near Großenschwand . The upper basin is the Rabenleite high reservoir . The Trausnitz reservoir, which is dammed up by the Trausnitztalsperre , serves as a further lower basin ( Trausnitz compensation plant ). The power plant group is used to generate electricity and belongs to GDF Suez .
The barrier structure of the Kainzmühlsperre is a gravity dam . A little further downstream , 3.3 MW is generated from the outflow of the Pfreimd from the Kainzmühlsperre with another small run-of-river power plant , the Tanzmühle plant. The intake structure of the Kainzmühlsperre was renewed in 2003.
Geologically significant gneiss outcrops can be observed at the dam wall and on the circular path around the reservoir .
The dam was renovated from May to September 2012 .
