history

The place arose from a clearing in the 11th century. The name ending ( "-schwand") indicates Schwendbau , a onetime common form of box construction , back. In documents from the years 1394 to 1399 the place at that time can be found as part of the domain of the Paulsdorfer under the name "Groszen Swant" and is documented with 16 farms . In 1821 51 families lived in the village. The volunteer fire brigade was founded on April 20, 1890 . At that time Großenschwand belonged to the royal district office of Vohenstrauss . The place had a total of 221 inhabitants in 1933.

On July 1, 1972, in the course of the municipal reform, the previously independent municipality Großenschwand was dissolved and moved to the Tännesberg market. The Vohenstrauß district , to which the municipality belonged, was also dissolved.
