history

A first forerunner of the Kreissparkasse Köthen was created on the basis of the ducal privilege of August 16, 1847 over a ducal-privileged savings bank . The administration of this institution was the Jewish trading BJ Friedheim & Co. transferred. This privilege expired in 1858 and with his highest resolution of November 11, 1858, the Duke decided to transfer the savings bank system in Anhalt to the cities of Bernburg, Dessau and Köthen. But it was still seven years before the first Sparkasse opened its doors in Köthen. Before that, in June 1865, the mayors of the three cities, of which only Bernburg had previously owned a savings bank, met to draft a statute for the savings banks.

The Sparkasse of the City of Koethen

The savings bank opened under the name Kreissparkasse zu Cöthen on November 20, 1865. On that day, 32 savings books were opened. The business premises were in the old town hall and were open on Mondays, Wednesdays and evenings. The city of Koethen was the guarantor. The bank BJ Friedheim & Co. continued to exist and advertised with better conditions. As the business of the Sparkasse developed well, the house at Marktstrasse 2 was bought in 1876. In 1898 the Sparkasse moved to the new, larger town hall. The construction of the town hall was financed by the Sparkasse. Other urban buildings financed by the Sparkasse were the homeless shelter with a loan of 17,500 marks and the takeover of the higher technical institute (later the engineering college, IHS) with 169,770 marks. When the First World War broke out, investors began to withdraw funds from the savings bank on a large scale. From July 28 to August 3, 1914, 220,000 marks were withdrawn, compared to 50,000 in the same period of the previous year. On March 23, 1923, the Sparkasse changed its name to Städtische Kreissparkasse zu Cöthen and in November of the same year to Stadtsparkasse zu Cöthen . Also in 1923 the savings bank rooms were relocated to the Ratskeller before they acquired the building at Schalaunische Strasse 40 in July 1926, later a branch of the State Bank of the GDR , unused in 2007 for 50,000 marks. A land charge of Commerz- und Privatbank AG of another 50,000 marks was added to the purchase price, which the Sparkasse also took over. In 1934 the Sparkasse had 20 employees and two apprentices as well as a branch in Gröbzig . At the end of the Second World War, the Stadtsparkasse merged with the Kreissparkasse.

The savings bank of the Koethen district

On August 4, 1885, the Köthens district council approved the statute for the Cöthen district savings bank , in particular at the instigation of the representative Jänicke from Baasdorf, and on November 18 of the same year the establishment of the district savings bank was approved by the sovereigns. Due to the financial circumstances of the district, the district council decided on January 31, 1886 to postpone the construction until further notice. The savings bank was only opened 20 years later. The reason for the opening were again financial considerations. In contrast to 1885, however, the possible profits were now considered and it was hoped to create a new source of income. The construction naturally met with opposition from the city, as they feared a loss of income for their own savings bank. With a resolution of June 25, 1906, it was decided with 12 to four votes, the votes against came from representatives of the city, the establishment of January 1, 1907. The head office was in the north wing of Köthen Castle. The Sparkasse had three branches in Köthen, Weintraubenstrasse 15, Markt 1 and Leipziger Strasse 64. In 1907 the district had branches in Edderitz , Groebzig , Großweißandt , Kleinpaschleben , Pißdorf , Prosigk , Radegast and Wulfen . In 1920 the main stables were relocated to the Prinzessinnenhaus Köthens. On January 19, 1924, the savings bank was renamed Kreissparkasse zu Cöthen . Previously, this designation was not possible because the municipal savings bank had used this designation. In 1927 Cöthen became known as Köthen. In 1930, the Kreissparkasse was the first to offer building society savings . Through the ordinance of the Anhalt State Ministry of November 17, 1931, the districts of Dessau and Köthen were merged and the seat of the district savings bank , which now operated as the Sparkasse of the district of Dessau-Köthen in Köthen , was moved to Dessau. Due to the need for larger business premises, a new building was built according to plans by Hans Heckner from Aschersleben . The business premises in Lindenstrasse were moved into in 1936. At the end of the Second World War, the Kreissparkasse merged with the Stadtsparkasse.

The merged savings banks

The former main building

After the end of the Second World War, the Stadt- und Kreissparkasse Köthen was officially closed on August 18, 1945 and opened on August 21, 1945 as a new savings bank which did not become the legal successor to the previous institute. The business premises in Lindenstrasse were taken over, Schalaunische Strasse 40 was taken over by the district and city bank in Köthen . The credit balances that had been invested in the savings bank before May 8, 1945 could not be used. In addition to the main office in Koethen, four branches and two voluntary branches were operated. One of the first big tasks of the new Sparkasse was the placement of the 4 percent build-up bond . The Sparkasse was able to place a total of 1.5 million Reichsmarks. Shortly thereafter, the currency reform from the Reichsmark to the GDR mark was the task of the Sparkasse. In 1953 furniture saving was introduced. For this, a saver had to save regular contributions for at least a quarter of a year and was then entitled to his credit balance and a loan of the same amount for furniture and furnishings. In 1954 two branches were opened; one in VEB Orbitaplast Weißandt-Gölzau and the other in VEB Förderanlagen und Kranbau Köthen . Electronic data processing was introduced in 1970.

End of the independent savings bank

In the course of the district reform in Saxony-Anhalt in 2007, the Köthen district was dissolved and part of the new Anhalt-Bitterfeld district . As a result of the reform, the savings banks were also restructured. In April 2008, the Kreissparkasse Köthen became part of the new Kreissparkasse Anhalt-Bitterfeld .

Business figures

At the end of 1945 the total of the deposits was 20 million Reichsmarks. After the conversion to Mark of the GDR in 1948, the total assets of the Sparkasse amounted to 9.8 million. The last complete annual financial statements of Kreissparkasse Köthen showed total assets of 577 million euros. A decrease of six million compared to the previous year.
