The Acer sempervirens ( Acer sempervirens ) is a plant from the genus of maple ( Acer ).

description

The Crete maple is a deciduous or semi-evergreen tree that reaches a stature height of 8 to 10 (under favorable conditions up to 16) meters, often remains a low shrub when bitten by cattle. The bark is dark gray with light brown cracks.

The leaves are 2 to 5 cm in size, leathery and three-lobed, but often unlobed or irregularly lobed, especially in bitten specimens. They are bare and shiny dark green on top, slightly lighter on the underside. The petiole is only 0.5 to 1.5 cm long.

The flowers are greenish-yellow and are about 5 in almost sitting, upright, later hanging umbrella clusters. The gap fruits have parallel or acute-angled wings.

Systematics

Synonyms for Acer sempervirens L. are Acer creticum auct. non L. , Acer orientale auct. non L. and Acer heterophyllum Willd.

The species is grouped in the subgenus Acer and in turn in the Monspessulana series .

distribution

The Crete maple is mainly found in Greece in the Aegean region. On the mainland it occurs only in the southern and central Peloponnese . On the Aegean Islands, its distribution extends from Samothrace in the north over the Northern Sporades , Euboea , Chios and the Cyclades to Crete . In Anatolia there are isolated finds in the mountains on the Aegean coast. The distribution area extends to Antalya along the Turkish south coast .

Location

The Crete maple occurs on Crete in the mountain forests of the limestone mountains at an altitude of 800 to 1500 m. In damp or shady locations, e.g. B. in ravines, on streams and on northern slopes as well as generally on smaller islands, the species occurs in much lower elevations. In the north of its range, the species only reaches heights of up to 900 m.
