The Kreuzkapelle in Sulzfeld am Main , Lower Franconia , in the Kitzingen district , is a small Catholic church. It stands on Erlacher Strasse outside the old town near the cemetery and belongs to the Kitzingen dean's office .

history

The history of the Kreuzkapelle begins with a donation of 2000 guilders from Sulzfeld's Elisabeth Behr on November 23, 1729 for the construction of a cemetery chapel. However, construction could only begin in 1748 by the Kitzingen master builder Johann Anton Schumm. The chapel was completed in 1752. The consecration was carried out by the Würzburg auxiliary bishop Daniel von Gebsattel on September 9, 1753.

The chapel was planned in the style of court architect Balthasar Neumann , based on the cross chapel of the same name in Kitzingen-Etwashausen. In the years 1899 and 1900, extensive renovations were carried out on the church. When the interior was renovated in 1952, the roof of the chapel was renewed. In 1987/1988 there was again a complete renovation. The chapel is under special protection as a monument .

architecture

The chapel in the form of a cross has a retracted choir , the nave has a window axis. A small roof turret was placed above the facade . The facade in the Baroque style is structured with pilasters . In addition, volute gables were attached. A figure of the risen Christ in a niche in the facade comes from the first half of the 18th century.

Furnishing

The oldest furnishing element of the Kreuzkapelle is a sandstone relief from 1596 on the back of the altar, which shows the crucifixion of Christ. The altar came into the church in 1899 and was created by the Feile brothers from Würzburg . The center is the Pietà under the cross, with reliefs and several worshiping angels on the side. The cafeteria is the oldest element of the altar . The former altar by Reiner Wirl burned in 1945 in the Luitpold Museum in Würzburg.

A memorial plaque refers to the former pastors in Sulzfeld. A tombstone for pastor Valentin Luckert von Kronungen honors one of the sons of the community. He died in 1922. The windows in the choir are decorated with glass paintings by the Munich artist Franz Xaver Zettler . Two figures in the nave show the saints Urban and Michael, both were created at the end of the 19th century. The ceiling is simply stuccoed. In 1953, the Lotter company from Bamberg installed two bells in the roof turret.
