The Kreuzstein is a rock in the Traun near Bad Ischl in the Upper Austrian Salzkammergut . He is carrying a crucifix .

location

The boulder is not far downstream of the city, between the Ischlerachen and Rettenbach estuaries at the foot of the Jainzenberg . It is located between the districts of Rettenbach and Roith (cadastral community Jainzen ), in the area of the junction Bad Ischl-Mitte / Ost of Wolfgangsee Straße  (B158) to Salzkammergutstraße  (B145), below the B145-Traunbrücke in the middle of the 30 m wide river.

The stone measures about 11 × 6 meters and rises 4 meters above normal water level.

Geology and hydrography

The rock is not an old landslide from the Jainzenberg, but - like the Einsiedlerstein on the Siriuskogel - an erratic (unfamiliar) block , a boulder from the Traungletscher or a bed load block from the Inner Salzkammergut that was transported here in post-glacial extreme floods , which lies deeper in the river bed.

In the event of a heavy flood of the Traun, the stone can be completely flooded, which almost happened at the 2013 event of the century .

history

Originally the rock was called Kohl [ en ] stone (the Kreuzstein was located downstream near Weißenbach ), its current name was not established until the late 19th century. It formed an obstacle in the Traun shipping, and also a congestion barrier for the city: An old legend tells that the devil had thrown the stone into the Traun to flood the city.

During the summer in the imperial city, the stone was considered an attractive sight that has been preserved in many representations. Due to the construction of the junction B145 / B158 in the 1970s, it is in a rather unattractive situation today.

The figure of the Savior, made of pewter , of the taller crucifix, was originally set in incarnate and has only been gilded since the late 19th century. The crucifix is a listed building . In 2007/2008, the cross was extensively restored with the support of the Ischler Heimatverein.
