Krishna Baldev Vaid
Krishna Baldev Vaid (* 1927 in Dinga , British India , † 6. February 2020 in New York City ) was an Indian Hindi - writer , university professor and literary translators .
Life
Vaid was born in 1927 in Dinga in what is now Pakistan . In 1947 the family fled to New Delhi in the course of the partition of India . In 1949 he received his Masters in English Literature from Panjab University in Chandigarh . His PhD from Harvard University , funded by a Fulbright scholarship , was Technique in the Tales of Henry James (published 1964 by Harvard University Press ).
From 1966 to 1985 he taught at the University of Delhi , Panjab University , Brandeis University and the State University of New York . His main focus, however, was on his work as a writer and there on the subject of alienation . Vaid lived alternately in the United States and the Indian continent and was a connoisseur of the culture of the Indian and Western worlds. In the 1980s he was the leader of a group of writers from the Indian avant-garde around the "Bharat Bhavan" in Bhopal . He has written forty books that have been translated into English , French and Japanese , among others . In 2012 Vaid's first book was published in German .
He was married to the painter and poet Champa Vaid . After his retirement in 1985 he returned to India and worked there on the Hindi translations of the works of Samuel Beckett , Lewis Carroll and Jean Racine .
