The Kudrjawy ( Russian Кудрявый , Japanese 硫黄岳 , Iō-dake ), the Global Volcanism Program of the Smithsonian Institution also known Moyorodake out, is a stratovolcano ( composite volcano ) on the Kurileninsel Iturup that the Pacific ring of fire is. It belongs to the Medvezhya volcanic complex, which is located at the northern end of Iturup. The volcano is unique in the world because of its fumaroles, which contain a lot of rhenium and indium .

geology

The entire volcanic complex Moyorodake (also Medvezhia ) is located at the northeastern end of the island of Iturup and was formed during the Pleistocene . It consists of two overlapping calderas with diameters of 14 × 18 and 1 × 12 km. The bottom of the caldera consists of several lava domes, ash cones and the associated lava fields as well as a small lake. Along an east-west line on the eastern side of the complex, four small, closely spaced stratovolcanoes developed with Kudrjawy ( Moyorodake ), Medweschje , Srednij and Tukap.

The volcanic cone of the Kudrjawy lies within the crater of Medweschje ( Medveschje ). At the foot of the volcano there are warm springs and lakes with an average temperature between 35 and 38 ° C.

The age of the volcano, which is currently 1,124 m high (as of 2017), is unknown. The earliest known eruption, determined by tephrochronology , probably took place around 50 BC. Chr. (BCE) instead.

Kudrjawy as a type locality

Rheniit from Kudrjawy

Kudrjawy is considered type locality for the minerals abramovite (Pb 2 SnInBiS 7 ), Cadmoindit (CdIn 2 S 4 ), Kudriavit ((Cd, Pb) Bi 2 S 4 ), rheniite (ReS 2 ) and Znamenskyit (Pb 4 In 2 Bi 4 S 13 ).
