The Lathyrus sphaericus ( Lathyrus sphaericus ) is a plant from the genus of grass pea ( Lathyrus ). It is common in Eurasia and North Africa.

Vegetative characteristics

The globular flat pea is an annual herbaceous plant and reaches heights of up to 50 centimeters. The stem is winged, which means that it has membranous ridges along its length. The leaves are provided with one to three pairs of leaflets and at the tip with an awn-like extension or a short tendril . The leaflets are very narrow and about 8 to 20 times as long as they are wide.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from mid-April to June. The peduncle, which is divided into two parts, is shorter than the leaf and has a 5 to 20 mm long linear (needle-shaped) leaf in or above the middle. The mostly solitary hermaphrodite flowers are 7 to 13 mm long, zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The petals are brick-red, which is why it is also called brick-red flat pea. The glabrous legume is 3 to 7 inches long and 4 to 7 mm wide. It contains 8 to 15 spherical seeds .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Occurrence

The globular pea occurs in the Mediterranean area , in North Africa and scattered across Asia Minor to India . There are individual occurrences in the Baltic Sea region, and it was naturalized in California. It grows mainly on dry lawns, in bushes and on embankments, but also in ruderal corridors .
