history

The preservation of cultural assets by citizens has a long tradition in Bavaria and has also significantly promoted the development of the cultural state principle . According to the Bavarian Constitution of 1946 , the protection of the natural foundations of life and the cultural tradition are constitutional mandates. According to this, the monuments of art, history and nature, the landscape as well as characteristic local and landscape images are to be protected, preserved and cared for.

Despite exemplary legal requirements (such as the Bavarian Monument Protection Act of the Free State of Bavaria that came into force on October 1, 1973 ) and advisory, supporting and promotional measures by the public sector and other funding institutions (such as the Bavarian State Foundation and the German Foundation for Monument Protection ), the owners of Cultural goods often at borders, so that up to the present day the loss of valuable cultural goods is often regretted.

In order to make a concrete contribution to the preservation of cultural assets in Bavaria and to allow as many people as possible to participate in the preservation and use of cultural assets, the idea of founding a National Trust for Bavaria was born. This was conceived as a cultural heritage foundation that takes over valuable cultural assets - in particular historical buildings and parts of the cultural landscape - as a trustee in order to preserve them in the long term with broad participation of the people and to make them tangible.

The idea matured at the Bavarian State Association for Homeland Care and quickly found many supporters. The Bavarian State Parliament unanimously passed a resolution according to which the transferability of the “National Trust Model” to Bavaria should be examined. In the course of this, the association Kulturerbe Bayern eV was founded in 2015, which the three speakers of the Bavarian Monument Network also co-founded. The decision on state start-up funding by the Bavarian State Parliament followed. The Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture, Science and Art and the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation supported the initiative from the start.

The primary task of the association in the founding and development phase is to make the initiative known to the general public, to carry out initial projects, to build up a group of volunteers and to prepare the foundation of the Bavarian Cultural Heritage Foundation . This goal was achieved on November 5, 2018: Eight founding donors set up the foundation on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the Free State of Bavaria and provided it with a sum of 200,000 euros from their private assets as start-up capital. This is an invitation to increase the share capital through donations in order to be able to pursue the goals more and more effectively. The investment income from the permanent base assets help to enable the foundation's activities in the long term. The establishment of the foundation sees the initiative as a sustainable and effective contribution to the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, which was under the motto “Sharing heritage”. The association and the foundation pursue their goals together.

First protégé

Judengasse 10 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Building " Judengasse 10 with the number: D-5-71-193-241 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber " (see list of architectural monuments in Rothenburg ob der Tauber ).

Rothenburg is world famous for its old town. But in the city center there is a needy treasure - a late medieval house with unique historical features. It is the first protégé of the Bavarian cultural heritage . The initiative wants to restore the historic building with the broadest possible participation of the people of Bavaria in accordance with the monument and keep it permanently with an attractive and lively use.

The first protégé is introduced

“This is the house with the medieval Jewish mikveh , certainly not the only one in Germany, but still a first-rate cultural and historical rarity. Both residential units 10 and 12 together form a semi-detached house from around 1400 with a shared roof structure and the original structure that has been preserved to a large extent, which can only be properly renovated if it belongs to a single owner. The purchase was made possible by generous financial donations from association members. "

Bavarian Heritage Ambassador

With the appointment as ambassador, Kulturerbe Bayern honors people who personally pursue and implement the goals of the initiative to a particularly high degree. Individual initiative and above-average commitment in the preservation and repair of cultural assets such as listed buildings, parks or gardens as well as the implementation of sustainable usage concepts for these and the commitment to the preservation and care of the intangible cultural heritage are among the decisive points for the appointment.

So far, Kulturerbe Bayern has honored five celebrities as ambassadors, thereby recognizing their personal commitment and commitment to the preservation of material and immaterial cultural assets.

  • The actors Volker Heißmann and Martin Rassau , known as Waltraud and Mariechen , were honored as the first cultural heritage ambassadors . In June 2018, the Franconian comedian duo was honored for their commitment to maintaining the Berolzheimerianium in Fürth, which has been home to the Fürth comedy since 1998.
  • Musician and composer Hans-Jürgen Buchner , front man of the band Haindling , received the award as Bavarian Heritage Ambassador in July 2018. His personal commitment together with his wife in the rescue and repair of a 400-year-old inn in Haindling near Geiselhöring in Lower Bavaria enables a versatile use of the building.
  • Cabaret artist Urban Priol was also appointed cultural heritage ambassador in July 2018 . Together with voluntary helpers and civic initiatives and support associations founded specifically for this purpose, he was able to restore the former orangery in Aschaffenburg Park Schöntal, in which the cabaret in the Hofgarten has been located since 1998 , and bring it back to life.
  • The popular actress Monika Baumgartner was appointed cultural heritage ambassador in November 2018. She would like to collectively preserve and pass on the ideas of Kulturerbe Bayern, built and grown cultural heritage in Bavaria, and inspire as many people as possible.
