The 412 km long Kulunda ( Russian Кулунда ) is a river in the southeast of the West Siberian lowlands ( Russia , Asia ).
The Kulunda rises on the Obplateau near the village of Ust-Mossicha , a good 100 km west of Barnaul at an altitude of about 200 m . It flows - always on the territory of Altai region - mostly in southwestern directions through the central part of Kulunda steppes , first by one of the typical several hundred long kilometers and a few kilometers wide "band forests", the "Kulundaforst" (Russian Kulundinskaja Lesnaja dacha ) , later through partly swampy, partly agriculturally used steppe area. Finally, the Kulunda opens into the located in a non-draining pool salty Lake Kulundinskoye (at 98 m ).
The catchment area of the Kulunda covers 12,400 km². Since the Kulunda has no major tributaries, its width does not exceed 20 meters over its entire length, the depth is about 1.5 meters. The river flows slowly at only 0.1 m / s. Because of the arid climate of the Kulunda steppe, the flow of the river tends to decrease towards the lower reaches and averages only 5.1 m³ / s near the mouth. During the snowmelt it is a maximum of 336 m³ / s, whereas in winter it can freeze to the ground for 45 to 100 days.
The largest town on the river is the Bajewo district administrative center . In the middle course, near the village of Andronowo, the Kulunda passes under the Kulunda Magistral Canal, which is used for irrigation and which branches off from the Ob .
