Kurt Hirschhorn
Kurt R. Hirschhorn (born May 18, 1926 in Vienna ) is an American geneticist of Austrian origin. The Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome was named after him and Ulrich Wolf .
Life
Kurt Hirschhorn was born on May 18, 1926 as the son of Emanuel Hirschhorn and his wife Helen (née Mayberger) in Vienna. Due to his father's Jewish ancestors, the family left after the annexation of Austria in 1938 via Switzerland and England to the United States.
After three months in New York , the family moved to Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , where Kurt Hirschhorn attended high school and then moved to the University of Pittsburgh . Following his military service Hirschhorn moved back to New York, his studies resumed, acquired in 1950 at the New York University to BA cum laude and in 1954 the MD degree at the New York University School of Medicine .
Kurt Hirschhorn was married and has three children.
Act
After a stay at the Institute for Human Genetics at Uppsala University in Sweden , from 1954 Hirschhorn worked here with Marco Fraccaro , among others , and from 1958, back in New York, he ran a genetics clinic. His research group grew to 14 members by the mid-1960s.
In 1966, Hirschhorn was appointed professor of pediatrics , the study of the development of the child and adolescent organism , at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine .
Awards
In 1995 Hirschhorn received the William Allan Award . In 2006 he received the Colonel Harland Sanders Award from the March of Dimes for his life's work in the field of genetics. Also in 2006 he received the John Howland Award from the American Pediatric Society.
The Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (also known as 4p chromosome syndrome known) is a rare congenital hereditary disease. The main symptom is a short stature combined with an extreme delay in mental and physical development and a combination of different malformations. It is named after Ulrich Wolf and Kurt Hirschhorn, who first described the clinical picture independently of one another in 1965.
