Goessel was the captain of the German shipping company Norddeutscher Lloyd . He became known posthumously when he and most of the passengers and crew went down with his ship.

On January 30, 1895, the 4510 gross register-ton passenger ship Elbe from Norddeutscher Lloyd was on a collision course with the coal steamer Crathie on its liner voyage from Bremerhaven to New York and sank . Of the 352 (or 394) passengers and crew members, only 22 survived the disaster in the single lifeboat.

Goessel married Louise Anna Christina Müller on September 9, 1874 in Hanover .
