Kurusch ( Russian Куруш ; Lezgian Къуруш ) is a village ( Aul , officially Selo ) in Dagestan ( Russia ). It is inhabited by Lesgiern and has 826 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

Kurush is considered to be the highest village in the Caucasus , as well as the Russian Federation and Europe, if, according to a widespread geographical definition, the main Caucasus ridge is seen as the border between Europe and Asia. It is at an altitude of 2560 meters above sea level. Kurusch is also the southernmost populated place in Russia.

The inhabitants of Kurusch live from cattle breeding and the cultivation of grain (barley).

history

In 1952 the residents of the place were resettled in the lowlands in the north of Dagestan, because areas in the south of Dagestan were to be given to the Azerbaijani SSR at that time and to be populated with Azerbaijanis. In Rajon Khasavyurt , about 20 km northeast of the city of Khasavyurt , therefore, was an also Kurusch called village (to differentiate unofficially "New Kurusch", Russian Новый Куруш / Nowy Kurusch, Lezgian ЦӀийи Къуруш ).

The old Kurush received the official name Kaler. Later some of the resettled residents returned, and around 1990 the old place name was restored.

Alpinism

Kurush is an important center of tourism and mountaineering in Dagestan; Dagestani, Russian and international climbing competitions take place on the steep walls of the mountains Bazardüzü ( 4466  m ) and Jerydag ( 3925  m ) on the border with Azerbaijan .

The nearby Schalbusdag , a four-thousand-meter peak north-west of the town with an altitude of 4150  m , is an important Muslim pilgrimage site. The ascent of the Schalbusdag is considered by the Muslims of Dagestan as a “little hajj”, comparable to the hajj to Mecca .
