Kvitka Cisyk
Kvitka "Kasey" Cisyk ( Ukrainian Квітка Цісик / Kwitka Zisyk ; born April 4, 1953 in Queens , New York , † March 29, 1998 in Manhattan , New York) was an American coloratura soprano of Ukrainian descent.
Life
Kvitka's parents, Volodymyr's father was a violinist, immigrated to New York with their older sister from the Ukraine in the 1940s. The musical family fostered the Ukrainian language and culture at home, so they didn't learn the English language until school. However, she learned to play the violin from her father at the age of five, so that she later received a scholarship at Binghamton University in Binghamton , which she graduated in 1970. The following year she attended an opera program in Ghent, Belgium , where she received a scholarship to the Mannes College of Music in New York City. There she attended opera courses with Sebastian Engelberg and graduated in 1974. In the 1970s she recorded two music tracks for the films You Light Up My Life and The One and Only , of which the former won an Oscar in 1978 for best film song and a Golden Globe Award received.
She gave up her real goal of becoming an opera singer after the death of her father and the subsequent move from her parents' household. In order to earn money, she now pursued a career as a singer of popular music and began to sing in clubs. She became a successful background singer in popular music, working with Carly Simon , Michael Franks, and Quincy Jones- produced musicians , among others .
She stayed with the wider American public in the years that followed through her participation in jingles for commercials - including for Coca-Cola , American Airlines , Mr. Pibb , Ford , McDonald’s and Burger King . In Ukraine she became famous for two albums on Ukrainian folk music.
She died of breast cancer at her Manhattan home at the age of 44.
