László Vasile Gergely (also Vasile Gergely ) or - in Hungarian - Gergely László (born October 28, 1941 in Nagybánya , Hungary (now Baia Mare , Romania )) is a former football player of Hungarian descent. He played a total of 180 games in Divizia A and the Bundesliga . He also took part in the 1970 World Cup.
Career
László Gergely began his career in his hometown of Baia Mare in CSM Baia Mare in the second Romanian football league, the Divizia B . After winning the UEFA youth tournament in the summer of 1962, this national team played in the following season under the name Viitorul Bucharest in Divizia A, so that Gergely moved there. With Viitorul he completed his first assignment in Divizia A on August 19, 1962 . After the club had already disbanded in the winter break of 1962/63, he moved to Dinamo Bucharest , but was initially only rarely used there. It was not until the 1964/65 season that Gergely was used more often and had his share in winning the championship. After the 1970 World Cup, Gergely moved to Germany, where he joined Hertha BSC . There Gergely was involved in the Bundesliga scandal and suspended for life on January 23, 1972. Then he emigrated to South Africa , where he became a police officer and also played football for Durban City for a year. Gergely was pardoned on January 26, 1973.
National team
Gergely played 36 games for the Romanian national soccer team . He made his debut on September 30, 1962 against Morocco . At the end of his national team career , he was nominated by national coach Angelo Niculescu for the soccer World Cup in Mexico in 1970 , where he came on as a substitute for the game against Czechoslovakia .

Private
László Gergely lives in Berlin and ran the club restaurant of 1. FC Wilmersdorf in the Volkspark Wilmersdorf on Blissestraße. Occasionally he was involved in youth work at 1. FC Wilmersdorf. His older brother, Iuliu Gergely (* 1939), was a Romanian U17 national player until he suffered a broken ankle in a friendly match, the improper treatment of which resulted in the amputation of his right leg and thus the end of his career. The youngest of the three brothers, Iosif Gergely († 2004), also played football, but only made it to the second division.
