Adolphe Messmer

Adolphe Messmer OFMCap (born September 26, 1900 in Wingen , France , † February 10, 1987 in Haguenau ) was a French clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Ambanja in Madagascar .

Life

Léon Aloyse Messmer took his religious vows on April 5, 1920 , took the religious name Adolphe and was ordained a religious priest of the Capuchins on March 28, 1925 . Pope Pius XI (1922-1939) appointed him on November 12, 1937 Apostolic Prefect of the island of Mayotte and Nossi-Bé and Comoros in Madagascar. He received his appointment as prefect of Ambanja on June 14, 1938. It followed on March 8, 1951, with simultaneous appointment as Apostolic Vicar of Ambanja, the appointment as titular bishop of Coropissus . The Bishop of Strasbourg Jean-Julien Weber PSS and his co-consecrators Bishop Joseph-Jean Heintz from Metz and Bishop Emeritus of Santorini Timoteo Giorgio Raymundos OFMCap rededicated it on June 29, 1951 Bishop. On September 14, 1955, he took over the bishopric of Ambanja and resigned on June 5, 1975 from his office. At the same time he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Comoros , he resigned on May 2, 1980 due to old age and became Bishop Emeritus of Ambanja until his death on February 10, 1987 .

During his tenure, he participated in the four sessions of the Second Vatican Council .
