Léon Wurmser

Léon Wurmser (born 31 January 1931 in Zurich , died on 15. February 2020 ) was an out of the Switzerland -derived American psychiatrist and psychoanalyst and the author of several extensive psychoanalytic studies.

Life

After attending an ancient language grammar school, Wurmser studied medicine at the universities of Zurich and Basel . After graduating in 1955, he trained as a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy and in internal medicine . In 1959, Wurmser received his doctorate. Then he moved to Baltimore in the USA because of better training opportunities .

In his academic career, Wurmser was a clinical psychiatrist and psychoanalyst and a professor at West Virginia University in Charleston (West Virginia) , USA, and at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County . After his retirement he worked as a teaching and control analyst for the New York Freudian Society in New York and as a psychoanalyst in his own practice in Towson , Maryland , and as an internationally sought-after speaker and author.

Wurmser was one of the first analysts in the history of psychoanalysis who no longer accepted the factual dogma that the most severe borderline personality disorders could not be treated by psychoanalysis and who refuted it through at least partially successful treatments. One focus of Wurmser's publications lies in dealing with the concept of the superego and the problem of shame .

In July 2004, Wurmser was awarded an honorary doctorate from the HU Berlin . He died in February 2020 at the age of 89.
