The Lion Fountain in Braunschweig was built either in 1822 or 1842 on the northern forecourt of the Katharinenkirche in Braunschweig.

prehistory

In the coalition and liberation wars against Napoleon I , troops from the occupied former duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg also fought . Many Brunswick died in these battles, including Duke Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand (1806 in the Battle of Jena and Auerstedt ) and his son Duke Friedrich Wilhelm (1815 in the Battle of Quatre-Bras ). In honor of the two fallen, architect Peter Joseph Krahe designed a memorial located on the Löwenwall and inaugurated on August 13, 1823. In the center of the oval square rises a 22 m high metal obelisk , which stands on a stair-like stone base. At each of the four corners, raised on plinths, lies a larger than life cast iron lion. These lions were created based on a design by the sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow . Both the obelisk and the lions were made in the "Princely Braunschweigische Hüttenwerke", a foundry in Zorge / Harz.

Fountain

According to Kimpflinger, in addition to the four lion wall lions, a fifth lion was cast as a "replacement" in case of transport damage on the way from the foundry to Braunschweig. According to Spies, however, this is a legend: When the Katharinenfriedhof was rebuilt in 1842, the Brunswick court architect Carl Theodor Ottmer ordered another lion from the foundry that still had the Schadow model. This was handed over to the Katharinengemeinde, who had a simply hewn base made of stone on which the lion lay. The fountain was set up on the triangular square on the north side of the church on Fallersleber Straße and originally served as a trough for horses and as a water point for the market people on the Hagenmarkt, just a few meters away . The water was brought from the Jödebrunnen in Hagen, about a kilometer away , on today's Wiesenstrasse.

After the fountain survived the extensive destruction of the Braunschweig city center during the Second World War largely unscathed, it remained at its original location until 2003, although it had lost its function. It was only stored on the site of the municipal building yard during construction work on the church forecourt . With financial support from the Richard Borek Foundation , a reconstruction of the Lion Fountain was initially planned for 2010. Finally, the lion fountain was put back in its original place in spring 2012.
