L'ora di punta (English: "rush hour") is a 2007 Italian drama film starring Fanny Ardant .

action

Filippo Costa followed in his father's footsteps and began a career in the finance department of the Italian military in Rome . His ambition quickly earned him the attention of his superiors, including Commander Salvi. Unscrupulous and determined to become a powerful businessman, Filippo quickly climbs the corporate ladder. As a civil servant, he searches for tax evaders, from whom he often takes bribes. In this way, he will soon amass a small fortune. The separation from his girlfriend Francesca throws him off track for a short time, but he soon concentrates fully on his career again.

When Filippo is supposed to check the balance sheets in an art gallery, he meets Caterina, the owner of the gallery. He and the older, but still attractive, widow spend a night together and begin a relationship. He moves into her house and enters the construction business through her business contacts. He shows just as little scruples as he did with his old post. He has now reconciled with Francesca. From then on they meet regularly in a hotel, where he finally gives her an engagement ring.

When the businessman Donati, who once bribed Filippo, threatens to blow him up, Filippo's star begins to decline. Meanwhile, Caterina finds out that Filippo is cheating on her with Francesca. She, in turn, angrily throws the engagement ring at his feet. After Donati was shot by a stranger while walking his dog, Filippo ruefully returns to Caterina, to whom he now gives the same ring that he had previously given Francesca. Although Caterina still feels taken advantage of by him, she lets champagne chill.

criticism

According to Variety's Jay Weissberg , the film had "major scripting problems", as if those responsible weren't sure "how to present the characters and keep them believable." One reason for the “disappointment” arises from the “high expectations” that Marra's previous films had fueled. The camera work is "nice, but boring".

Awards

At the Venice International Film Festival in 2007, the film took part in the competition for the Golden Lion , which was ultimately awarded to Ang Lee's Danger and Desire ( Sè, jiè ).

Individual evidence

  1. “Pic does have major problems in the scripting department, uncertain how to present characters and keep them believable. […] Part of the disappointment comes from the high expectations following Marra's previous features […]. Even the lensing here is attractive but bland.
