The LEB RBe 4/8 are two - part meter - gauge electric low-floor multiple units operated by Chemin de fer Lausanne-Echallens-Bercher (LEB) in western Switzerland, manufactured by Stadler Altenrhein .
Starting position
Although the order for six multiple units awarded to Stadler Rail Altenrhein on December 10, 2008 amounted to around 41 million francs, it was not announced by either the LEB or the manufacturer. The canton of Vaud provided a loan guarantee of CHF 41 million in advance for the procurement . With the procurement, the LEB took account of the increased passenger volume, which has doubled since the route from Chauderon to the city center to Flon was extended . The new trains were also a prerequisite for the introduction of the quarter-hour service between Lausanne-Flon and Cheseaux . The first six vehicles came into operation in 2010.
Because several Vaudois meter-gauge railways recorded strong increases in demand, the canton decided in 2013 to increase the capacity and renew the private railways operating in its area. While MBC , Travys , MOB and NStCM procured the newly developed meter gauge trains from western Switzerland , MVR and TPC together ordered 15 gear GTWs and the LEB four more RBe 4/8s , which were delivered in 2017. At this time, the LEB was planning to rejuvenate its fleet with six more two-part multiple units.
technology
The two-part trains consist of two identical railcars with more than 60% low-floor space and are prepared for a subsequent extension with an intermediate car. The designation RBe 4/8 is due to the maximum speed of 120 km / h, which, however , cannot be extended on the Lausanne – Bercher route . Although, as with Flirt, the high-floor areas are located above the outer powered bogies , the vehicles cannot be assigned to any of the well-known Stadler vehicle types.
The RBe 4/8 are 42.1 meters long, offer 118 seats and are equipped with air conditioning and air-sprung bogies. The low-floor areas between the two entry doors of each car body contain multi-purpose compartments with space for prams, bicycles and wheelchairs. The total of eight doors with a width of 140 centimeters allow passengers to change quickly. A special feature are the two sliding steps, which are arranged one above the other, which allow adjustment to different entry heights from the pavement to platforms up to 55 centimeters high. Up to three trains can run in multiple control , whereby the extension of various platforms would be necessary for triple traction.
