La Patrie is a municipality in the south of the Canadian province of Québec . It is located in the Estrie region , about 60 km east of the city of Sherbrooke . La Patrie belongs to the regional municipality of Le Haut-Saint-François , has an area of 206.95 km² and has 749 inhabitants (2011).
geography
La Patrie is located a few kilometers southwest of Mont Mégantic (1105 m), the highest point of the Montérégie hills . The place on the left bank of the Rivière au Saumon is surrounded on all sides by extensive forests. Part of the municipality belongs to the Parc national du Mont-Mégantic . The border with the US state New Hampshire runs around twelve kilometers south of the town . Neighboring municipalities are Hampden in the north, Val-Racine in the northeast, Notre-Dame-des-Bois in the east, Chartierville in the south and Newport in the west.
history
La Patrie was founded in 1873 by Pierre Vaillant, who had returned to Québec from Rhode Island and opened a sawmill . The settlement was initially called Notre-Dame-des-Bois , but soon the name La Patrie ("home"), derived from the name of the local newspaper, caught on. In 1878 the parish was formed, in 1889 the civil parish. La Patrie was an enclave in the middle of the parish of Ditton for more than a century until it was incorporated on December 24, 1997.

According to the 2011 census, La Patrie had 749 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 3.6 inh. / Km². 96.7% of the population stated French as their main language, the share of English was 2.7%. 0.7% said they were bilingual (French and English). Only French spoke 68.0%. In 2001 97.5% of the population were Roman Catholic and 1.3% were non-denominational.
Transport and economy
Two main roads cross in La Patrie, Route 212 in a west-east direction and Route 257 in a north-south direction.
The main industries of La Patrie have always been agriculture and the timber industry . The well-known guitar manufacturer Godin was founded here and still operates one of the now six workshops in the village. A series of classical guitars is named after the place where it was founded.
La Patrie also became famous as the venue for biathlon races.
