The Laber is a sounding ship the water and navigation administration of the federation with high-resolution sidescan sonar system for low water depths.

Ships of the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration are often named after rivers in their area of operation. Here the big Laber was named. By omitting the prefix Große , it can be seen how the changes in the river structure, Kleine Laber and Große Laber were artificially merged, also affect the use of the name.

Beating in motion, swing unit extended

The Laber is a work ship of the "Spatz type" and is 15.05 m long, 4.40 m wide and has a draft of 1.20 m. An MTU 6R 183 AA62 with 150 kW power is installed as the main engine. The bollard pull of the Laber is specified as 20 kN.

The direction finding system was installed by Kongsberg Maritime AB in 2009 and consists of an area echo sounder system , an RTK system for position and altitude determination with GPS and 3-axis motion sensors and the computer unit. The echo sounder system works in the 200 kHz range with 37 individual transducers, which are attached to a transducer mounting system on the thrust shoulder at the bow of the ship. The transducer mounting system can be expanded to three times its width for measuring operation.

commitment

The direction finding ship Laber is operated by the Regensburg Waterways and Shipping Office . In addition to being used to monitor the condition of the Danube federal waterway , the Laber is also used in an ongoing scientific project.

Investigation of the bed load behavior

In a nature experiment in the Danube between Do-km 2308.7 and Do-km 2307.7, the bed load behavior is investigated using tracing material. In this scientific study by the Federal Institute for Hydraulic Engineering , the Laber is often used as a sounding ship to document changes in the brine. The Laber also takes samples from the river brine, which are then frozen using liquid nitrogen so that they can be taken as compact test specimens. These samples are used to track the tracing material .

Sister ships

The DF ship Regen with the ENI number 05038640 is a sister ship of the Laber and is also operated by the Regensburg Waterways and Shipping Office.
