The river has its source in the Landshut district near Pfeffenhausen -Egg. From its source , the Kleine Laber mostly flows in a north-easterly direction, including through Neufahrn in Lower Bavaria , where it feeds from the right of the Goldbach from Ergoldsbach , and then reaches the Straubing-Bogen district . It flows through or passes through Mallersdorf-Pfaffenberg , Geiselhöring and Perkam . Finally it passes Atting or Rain , after which it flows into the Große Laber at Atting-Wallmühle .

Originally the Kleine Laaber flowed into the Danube near Landstorf in what is now the municipality of Aholfing at river kilometer 2333.6 ( ). The course of the Großer and Kleiner Laaber was changed to the current course in the course of the Danube expansion.

The catchment area of the Kleine Laber covers around 150 square kilometers. The Neufahrn – Radldorf railway and the Labertal cycle path (between Neufahrn and Straubing ) run along the Kleine Laber .

Kleine Laber (Lower Au)

Kleine Laber in the Lower Au near Landstorf

By relocating the estuary of the Große Laber in connection with the construction of the Straubing barrage , a section of the Kleine Laber between its original confluence with the Danube and the "junction" with the relocated Große Laber was separated from the rest of the river. In the north, the historic mouth was closed by the side dike of the barrage, from the west the Alte Laber , the oxbow river of the Große Laber , running in the north , was hydraulically connected to this section via an old ditch system , which in the south now flows into the Große via a pumping station Laber is drained. This section of the river bears the water code 156929 and is referred to in official documents as Kleine Laber (Untere Au) .
