Labib Habachi

Labib Habachi (born April 18, 1906 in Mansura , † February 18, 1984 in Cairo ) was an Egyptian Egyptologist .

Life

Habachi attended the Coptic School in Mansura and the Maronite School in Cairo . In 1924 he began studying mathematics at Fu'ad I. University (later Cairo University ), but switched to Egyptology a year later, where he obtained his bachelor's degree in 1928 . In 1930 he was appointed inspector of the Egyptian Antiquities Administration. He has held posts in Aswan , Luxor , Cairo, Edfu , Fayum , Abydos , Sohag , Zagazig and Tanta . In 1944 he was appointed chief inspector of Upper Egypt. Apart from 1950 to 1951, when he worked in Saqqara , he held this office until 1958 , when he was appointed sub-director of field work . He held this office until 1960. He was then an archaeological consultant for the Nubian expedition of the University of Chicago Oriental Institute . He became one of the leading archaeologists of his generation in Egypt. He carried out excavations across the country. In particular, he excavated the Heqaib sanctuary in Elephantine, discovered the Kamose stele in Karnak and did research in Bubastis and Qantir in the delta.

Habachi became a member of the German Archaeological Institute in 1953 and the Institut d'Égypte in 1964 , honorary member of the Egyptological Institute of Charles University in Prague in 1965 and of the Société Française d'Égypte in 1983. He received the Egyptian State Prize and an Order of First Class in the Humanities and Natural Sciences, the Italian Order of Merit in 1959 , the Order of Merit of the French Legion of Honor in 1973 and the Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st Class in 1980 . In 1966 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from New York University . In 1978 he was elected Honorary President of the International Association of Coptic Studies .

Habachi was married to Attiya Hanim Kamil Ayad.
