The Lac de Lavaud is a reservoir divided into two barrages on the upper reaches of the Charente in France. The dams were completed in 1989.

geography

The reservoir, located at 221 meters above sea level, extends over the municipality of the municipalities of Lésignac-Durand , Saint-Quentin-sur-Charente , Pressignac , Verneuil and Massignac in the Charente department, as well as the municipality of the Videix municipality in the Haute-Vienne department . The eponymous hamlet Lavaud and the northern main dam are about 2 kilometers southeast of Saint-Quentin. The Lac du Mas Chaban reservoir is around 3.5 kilometers to the west . Both reservoirs together form the Lacs de Haute-Charente .

The D 160 from Verneuil to Pressignac divides Lac de Lavaud into two halves, with the upper reservoir only about 1.5 kilometers long and the lower 3.6 kilometers long. The upper reservoir is also split into two arms, the right one following the course of the Charente river and the left following that of the Treize upstream. The upper reservoir is held back by a dam made of coarse blockwork over which the D 160 runs. At the northern end of the dam, the upper reservoir drains through a concrete overflow beneath the D 160 into the lower reservoir.

The catchment area of the Charente above Lac de Lavaud is around 40 square kilometers, the Treize, which flows in from the south, acts as another tributary on the left. The pent-up volume amounts to a total of 7.8 million cubic meters. The flow rates fluctuate between 69 and a maximum of 2000 liters per second.

The reservoir has a regulating function - it bridges dry periods in the summer months and restricts floods in the rainy seasons . The surrounding agriculture is dependent on him for the artificial irrigation of the fields.

geology

The Lac de Lavaud lies entirely in the crystalline basement of the northwestern Massif Central . These are mainly plagioclash-containing paragneiss of the lower gneiss cover . At the upper reservoir, at La Chassagne and La Guerli, the Saint-Gervais granite stands . It is a reddish colored, calcareous granite / granodiorite . A special feature is a small isolated occurrence of impact breccias of the Rochechouart type south of Lavaud . It comes from the approximately 200 million year old crater of Rochechouart-Chassenon and is at a distance of a good 3 kilometers from the closed impact cover of Videix further east Cut. Its existence thus increases the previously known radius of the crater.

tourism

The reservoir caused an increase in visitor numbers in this sparsely populated and purely agricultural region, especially in the summer months. The tourist development was mainly concentrated on the upper reservoir, which now has two beaches ( La Guerlie and La Chassagne ), two restaurants, a bistro, a campsite, a residential area and a rental shop for sailing boats and windsurfers. Due to the hot and dry summers of the past few years, however, there were problems with the water quality due to increased cyanobacteria , so bathing had to be partially discontinued from 2016.
