Lagoa da Fajã dos Cubres is a lagoon on the Portuguese Azores island of São Jorge . It is located in the Calheta district on a 34-  hectare coastal plain, the Fajã dos Cubres , which was given its current shape by a massive landslide in 1757 and subsequent erosion and human influences.

The lake was completely separated from the sea in a natural way by a 900 m long, 30 m wide and more than 4.3 m high scree barrier. However, there is a limited exchange of salt water, on the one hand due to the fact that sea water seeps through the barrier, which causes the height of the water level to fluctuate by 20 to 30 mm with the tides , and on the other hand, in storms, also across the barrier. In addition, the lake is fed by groundwater . The lagoon contains several islands, one of which divides the lake into two parts in connection with a dam built in 1951, which today have very different salinity . The inland eastern part contains brackish water with a salt content below 0.6%, while the water in the western part contains an average of 1.5% salt on the surface and 2.6% on the bottom.

The shores of the lagoon are almost everywhere difficult to access as they are surrounded by a belt of stinging rush . The water can only be reached in the east, where pastureland extends to the lake, at the beginning of the dam in the south and at the barrier in the north. The eastern part of the lake is also flat in its central part, the bottom covered by black, anoxic mud. Mats, which mainly consist of the green alga Enteromorpha intestinalis , float in the water . The pond frog also lives in this part of the water . In the western part, which is much deeper, there are mats of the green alga Codium effusum in the shallow water area . A wide belt of the Ruppia maritima beach balance extends directly below the lower tide line .

The lagoon is an important habitat for native resident birds such as the snowy plover , the teal , the mallard , the moorhen and the Caspian as well as for migratory birds such as the Sanderling , the gull , the black-headed gull , the black-tailed godwit , the little egret and the Whimbrel . Also, the Ruddy Turnstone , the rose tern , the common snipe , the gray heron , the great yellowshank , the greenshank and the coot have been observed here.

The lake is located in the Natura 2000 area PTJOR0014 ("Costa NE e Ponta do Topo - Ilha de S. Jorge") and in the Ramsar area 1615 ("Fajãs' of Caldeira and Cubres Lagoons").
