Lajos Vető

Lajos Vető (born October 17, 1904 in Kondoros , † September 22, 1989 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian Evangelical Reformed pastor , bishop of the Hungarian Reformed Church and religious psychologist .

Live and act

Lajos Vető studied Protestant theology in Sopron from 1924 to 1928, and from 1929 to 1931 in Berlin and Tartu ( Estonia ). In 1928 he became the evangelical pastor ordained . His doctorate took place in Pécs in the field of religious studies . In 1953 he received an honorary doctorate from the Evangelical Theological Academy in Pozsony .

Between 1928 and 1929 Vető was an assistant chaplain in Medgyesegyháza , and from 1931 to 1937 in Szolnok . From 1939 to 1948 he served as a clergyman in the Diósgyőr community. In 1948, after Zoltán Túróczy , who had been bishop of the Tisza church district up until then , was appointed to the head of the Transdanubian church district, Lajos Vető was elected bishop of the Evangelical Tisza church district due to strong party and state pressure. He also became a clergyman of the Nyíregyháza community . His colleague in the presidium Emil Margóczy was inspector of the church district. Soon Bishop Vető took over the organization of the foreign connections of the Evangelical Church. In March 1950 he represented the Hungarian state and the Evangelical Church at the Stockholm meeting of the World Peace Council . On April 4, 1951, he received an award from the peace movement .

In 1952, the four Protestant church districts so far became two. Lajos Vető became bishop of the eastern church district and clergyman of the Budapest parish. On November 1, 1956, as a result of the Hungarian popular uprising , he resigned his office and the parishes elected Zoltán Túróczy as bishop in his place. After Bishop Túróczy had been dispensed again in December 1957 , Vető was again President of the church district. In 1967 he left for health reasons in retirement . His successor was Ernő Ottlyk .

Lajos Vető was a member of parliament between 1953 and 1971 . He was also active as a member of the international society for psychology .

In 1958 Vető was one of the founders of the Christian Peace Conference . He also worked in the Second All-Christian Peace Assembly , which took place in Prague in 1964 .
