Lambert Cornelius
Joseph Lambert Maria Cornelius (born March 24, 1778 in Düsseldorf ; † September 7, 1823 there ) was a German painter and drawing teacher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy .
Life
Lambert Cornelius was the son of the Düsseldorf painter and academy inspector Johann Christian Alois Cornelius (1748–1800) and his wife Anna Helena Corsten. Like his famous brother, the history painter Peter Cornelius (1783–1867), Lambert Cornelius was taught drawing and painting by his father. After his death, he took over the post of academy inspector at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. As such, he was one of the few remaining teachers at the Düsseldorf Academy, which suffered a decline with the removal of the collection of the Düsseldorf Picture Gallery in 1805 and the Grand Duchy of Berg in the following period . Besides him, only the architect Karl Friedrich Schäffer and the engraver Ernst Carl Thelott taught there . Cornelius' pupils during this time included Theodor Hosemann and Heinrich Heine . When the Düsseldorf Academy was re-established as the "Royal Prussian Art Academy" under his brother Peter, he was taken on as an inspector and teacher for the academy lessons, but as a result of a nervous disease only taught at the beginning of the winter semester of 1822/23. In early 1823 he retired and died just a few months later.
Lambert Cornelius was considered a “mediocre artist”, otherwise nothing is known about his artistic work.
