Lampasas is the county capital and county seat of Lampasas County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located northeast of the geographic center of Texas at the intersection of US Highways 183 , 281 and 190 on Sulfur Creek and has a total area of 16.1 km², of which 0.1 km² is water.
history
The place was founded around 1850 by John Burleson , who was granted 1280 acres of land here for his services during the Texan Revolution and established the permanent settlement. Thereafter the name was changed to Lampasas Springs due to the seven mineral springs in the area. When the county was formed in 1856, there was an ordinance that the city should be called like the county and was renamed to its current name.

According to the 2000 census, 6,786 people in 2,554 households and 1,711 families lived here. The population density was 424.0 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 84.78% White, 2.03% African American, 0.71% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, and 10.06% other ethnic groups. About 1.77% were mixed race and 23.11% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,554 households, 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.4% of these were married couples living together. 13.9% were single mothers and 33.0% were non-families. 29.5% of all households were single households and there were people living in 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.13.
27.6% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.2% 18 to 24, 25.2% 25 to 44, 20.2% 45 to 64, and 18.8% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 88.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 84.0 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 27,898 , and the median income for a family is $ 31,012. Males had a median income of $ 26,606 versus females of $ 19,959. The per capita income was $ 13,409. 21.1% of the population and 18.3% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 28.5% were children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 16.9% were 65 or older.
