Lamphun ( Thai : ลำพูน , Lanna : หละ ปูน , Lapun ; historically Haripunjaya or Hariphunchai) is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Lamphun and the province of Lamphun in the northern region of Thailand .

history

According to traditional chronicles, Haripunjaya, the forerunner of today's Lamphun, was founded by the Mon around 660 and was the capital of their empire of the same name in the following centuries . The city was also an important economic and cultural center. In 1293 Mangrai , the founder of the Lan Na empire , conquered the city. It was then renamed Lamphun. It was the capital of one of the independent, but politically, socially and culturally linked principalities of Lan Nas. In 1873, Lan Na was finally added to Siam (today's Thailand).

geography

Lamphun is about 670 kilometers north of Bangkok and 15 miles south of Chiang Mai , the country's second largest city. Due to its remote location, Lamphun was able to preserve the originality of a Thai city.

Neighboring districts are (from the south clockwise) Amphoe Mae Tha and Pa Sang of Lamphun province, the Amphoe San Pa Tong , Hang Dong and Saraphi of Chiang Mai Province , Amphoe Ban Thi Lamphun and Amphoe Mae On turn of Chiang Mai.

The Mae Nam Wang flows through the district from east to west. At the southwestern tip of the district, the Wang joins the Mae Nam Ping .

Economy and Transport
