history

In 1844 Gustav Max Schmidt founded a teaching and educational institution in Fellin, of which he was director until his death in 1874. As a pupil, Schmidt had attended the Latin school of the orphanage of the Francke Foundations in Halle , also studied in Halle and passed the teacher's examination in Dorpat . He worked as a teacher in Birkenruh from 1935 to 1843 . 1875 took over Livonian Knighthood the Schmidt's institution now than Landesgymnasium. The new construction of a large representative main building according to the plans of the Rigenser architect R. Häussermann was inaugurated in 1877. The directors were Carl Hoheisel from 1875 to 1877, Heinrich Seesemann from 1877 to 1883 and Franz Waldmann from 1884 to 1892. When German was banned as the language of instruction in the Baltic Sea Governments in 1892 , the grammar school - as well as the state grammar school Birkenruh - was closed. From 1906 until the beginning of World War I and during the German occupation in 1918, a German school existed in the building, which was nationalized after Estonian independence. Today the Viljandi Kesklinna Kool (City Center School Viljandi) is located there .
