The association was founded in 1990 under the name “Regional Cultural Promotion in the Former Principality of Lüneburg” and renamed “Lüneburg Landscape Association” in 1997. His sphere of activity includes the area of ​​the historic principality of Lüneburg and thus mainly the Lüneburg Heath , but also the Wendland and the Neuhaus district .

The subsidies are financed on the one hand by grants from the state of Lower Saxony, on the other hand by the contributions of the members and by grants from the Landschaftliche Brandkasse, in which the "Landscape of the former Principality of Lüneburg", a participant of the Landscape Association, is involved.
