Larry Karush

Larry Karush (born October 6, 1946 ; † August 27, 2013 ) was an American pianist, percussionist ( tabla ) and composer in the field of modern jazz and world music .

Live and act

Karush holds a Master of Arts degree from New York University . In 1976 he was one of the four pianists in Steve Reich's ensemble ( Music for 18 Musicians ); in the same year he submitted recordings under his own name. During his career he worked a. a. with the jazz musicians John Abercrombie , Jane Ira Bloom , Jay Clayton , Bennie Wallace and the band Oregon , as well as with the world musicians Kanai Dutta , Francisco Aguabella and Terry Riley . In the 1990s he formed the improvisation trio Mokave with Glen Moore and Glen Velez (two albums in 1991 and 1993). In the following years he toured with his Larry Karush Ensemble , which included Dave Carpenter (bass), Kendall Key (drums) and Joey DeLeon (percussion). In the field of jazz he was involved in 12 recording sessions between 1976 and 1997, apart from the aforementioned also with Eddie Daniels .

Karush also taught as artist in residence and held workshops in composition and improvisation in New York City and Los Angeles, a. a. at Berklee College, at the California Institute for the Arts , at the University of California (1991–94) and most recently at Occidental College in Los Angeles. He died in August 2013 of complications from liver cancer .

Prizes and awards

Karush has received grants and awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts , the National Endowment for the Arts , Meet the Composer , the California Arts Council, and the City of Los Angeles. He was a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship in Composition; In 2008 he was nominated for the Herb Alpert Foundation Prize in Music.
