Lars Johan Hierta (born January 23, 1801 in Uppsala , † November 20, 1872 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish publisher and politician. He is known as the founder of the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet .

Life

Hierta was born as the son of Carl Didrik Hierta and Hedvig Johanna Schméer. He lost his mother at an early age. In 1814 he started studying at Uppsala University . In 1821 he became a doctor of philosophy and cand. Jur. In the same year he took an unpaid position at the Bergskollegium , where he then worked as a trainee lawyer in 1825 . At the Swedish State Council of 1823 he took part as secretary of the Riddarhuset . In later meetings from 1828 to 1830 he represented the nobility and also acted as legal secretary. He represented liberal positions and criticized the conservative reign of Karl XIV. Johann .

In 1823 he began to write for the Conservationsbladet . From 1824 to 1826 he wrote for Argus and from 1826 to 1828 occasionally for Stockholmsposten . At first he was rather satirical, but then wrote news articles and political comments. In 1829 he founded his own publishing house with Hiertas Bokförlag . In 1830 he founded the initially liberal newspaper Aftonbladet. He is considered a Swedish pioneer of press freedom . In 1839 the Liljeholmens Stearinfabriks AB candle factory was founded . In 1853 he bought Årsta Castle .

When he died in 1872, Hierta was one of the richest people in Sweden. His widow Vilhelmina Fröding donated 100,000 SEK to establish a professorship in economics at Stockholm University . 400,000 SEK were donated to the Lars Hiertas minne Foundation . The Lars Johan Hierta memorial was erected in Stockholm in 1927 in his honor .
